The Silver Cichlid (Vieja argentea) is a beautiful white with black markings fish that has an iridescent sheen which gives it the silver appearance that distinguishes it from other cichlids. Males grow larger, with dominant well groomed specimens displaying a visible hump on the head.
This large American cichlid requires a minimal aquarium with open space, decorated with rocks and wood however it must be expected that the fish will be pushing those decorations and moving them in the aquarium, therefore they are not suitable for an aquascape or planted set up.
Silver Cichlids can be aggressive, especially towards members of the same species. They can live in a community of large Central American cichlids if enough space and hiding spots is provided. An adult pair can live peacefully but must be monitored.
The Silver Cichlid is sold by Discus.ae as small to medium sized juveniles which are adapted to local parameters. We recommend feeding them a mixture of high quality dry food (such as our Cichlid Bio-Gold+ granules) and a variety of our frozen diets to achieve optimum growth and development.
Fish Size Guide:
The ‘Maximum Size’ outlined below is the length this fish can reach as a full grown adult. For the actual size please use the select menu above.
Discus.ae prefers younger stock for their better ability to adapt to new water parameters and higher tolerance against transport. On rare occasions you may receive larger specimens when small fish are unavailable, however the smallest should be expected unless the size is noted as “Large” or “Adult”.
