This North-American species of ray-finned fish in the genus Notropis has translucent color from pink to golden with a silver-black stripe along its flanks. The base of its fins are of a reddish color.
This fish loses its coloration in transport and requires time and a stable environment for it to regain over a period of several weeks. The picture shown is a mature male in ideal water conditions. Rainbow shiners are not recommended for beginners due to their special water requirements to display their best coloration.
Rainbow Shiner is also an active shoaling fish which requires to be in groups, it is peaceful and can be kept with other similarly tempered fish that don’t mind the same environment.
Fish Size Guide:
The ‘Maximum Size’ outlined below is the length this fish can reach as a full grown adult. For the actual size please use the select menu above.
Discus.ae prefers younger stock for their better ability to adapt to new water parameters and higher tolerance against transport. On rare occasions you may receive larger specimens when small fish are unavailable, however the smallest should be expected unless the size is noted as “Large” or “Adult”.
